Former UT Student Sentenced to 10 Years in Terrorism Plot

He was convicted of trying to recruit fighters in Somalia.

Rahatul Ashikim Khan, a former University of Texas-Austin student who pleaded guilty to aiding terrorists in Somalia, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, KEYE TV is reporting.

Khan, 24, was a resident of Round Rock. He is a Bagladesh-born U.S. citizen and his father is an Army psychiatrist.

Authorities said he used a chat room through the website “AuthenticTauheed” as a platform to spot and assess potential recruits to wage jihad overseas, according to the Austin American-Statesman.
