AUSTIN, TX — A foundation has been created to benefit the children of a local pediatrician who was fatally shot this week, officials announced Friday.

The Lindley Dodson Education Foundation was created to raise funds of the namesake pediatrician who was gunned down by another physician late Tuesday. Following an hourslong standoff, police said another pediatrician who had previously visited the Children's Medical Group offices at 1912 W. 35th St. where Dodson, 43, worked entered the offices armed before killing the pediatrician and himself.

The suspect was said to have been terminally ill with cancer. A motive for the shooting is unknown.

The grounds of the medical clinic have since been transformed into a makeshift memorial of sorts as mourners deliver messages and flowers following the violence that rocked the medical community. The newly launched foundation is intended to raise funds to finance the education of the fallen doctor's three young children — Shaw, Tucker and Loretta — as a representative explained to Patch in an email.

"Through gifts to the Foundation, the family can be assured of the resources required to fund future educational needs, and donors can reflect the generous spirit that Lindley demonstrated in her practice, in her community, and with her friends and family," the email reads.

Formed with the approval of the Dodson family, the foundation already has received more than $100,000 in commitments from the community, according to the email. “The Foundation is an opportunity for our community to serve Lindley’s family and children and the family’s charitable goals around education in the same way she loved and cared for ours," Dodson family friend Doug Wolfe said in a prepared statement.
