Interstate 35 At William Cannon Drive Closed This Weekend

Work is intended to allow crews and cranes to lift and place beams for the north side of the William Cannon Drive bridge.

AUSTIN, TX — Texas Department of Transportation crews will temporarily close northbound and southbound main lanes of Interstate 35 to set beams on the William Cannon Drive bridge, officials said Friday.

The overnight closures are as follows:

  • 11 p.m. – 9 a.m. Friday night, May 11 (northbound)
  • 11 p.m. – 10 a.m. Saturday night, May 12 (southbound)

The work is intended to allow crews and cranes to lift and place beams for the north side of the William Cannon Drive bridge, officials said in a press advisory. Lane closures and construction activities are part of the Mobility35 program which will bring mobility, safety, and connectivity for all modes of transportation, officials said.

Northbound I-35 main lanes at the William Cannon Drive exit will be closed on Friday, May 11, from 11 p.m. to 9 a.m., and southbound I-35 main lanes will be closed on Saturday, May 12 from 11 p.m. to 10 a.m., weather permitting. During the closures, I-35 main lane traffic will be detoured to the frontage roads at William Cannon Drive. The William Cannon Drive bridge will be closed both nights beginning at 9 p.m. and traffic will be detoured south to Slaughter Lane or north to Stassney Lane.

Road signs have been placed to alert drivers of the upcoming closures. Officials urged drivers to seek alternate routes as delays are expected. TxDOT asks the traveling public to adhere to construction signage and remain aware when traveling through the work zone.

Officials said the I-35 from Stassney Lane to William Cannon Drive project will bring improvements to mobility, safety, and connectivity for all modes of transportation. These include improved entrance/exit ramps, reconstruction of the Stassney Lane and William Cannon Drive bridges, adding U-turn lanes, and bicycle and pedestrian enhancements. Work on the $79 million project is expected to be complete winter 2019/2020, officials said.
