Jazz Mills Launches Meal Support Project Amid COVID-19
Free Lunch is an Austin-based effort helping those in need receive a meal and morale boost as they navigate the challenges of homelessness.
AUSTIN, TX — In an effort to respond to the rise in homelessness as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Jazz Mills created Free Lunch– a meal support project that works to not only provide at nourishment, but to help boost the recipient's morale through fresh, homemade food. With the assistance of local, chefs, bakers and farmers, Free Lunch is able to feed the hungry using high quality ingredients, while ensuring surplus product does not go to waste.
Free Lunch is partnering with Wild Heart Dirt to launch a garden designed specifically for the meal support program. The goal of sourcing food from the program's garden will help plan healthy meals around what vegetables and fruits are in season. Paired with compostable packaging, the program also strives to create a zero waste system.
The community is invited to participate in this life-changing project by signing up as a Lunch Monitor, one of the most important parts of the Free Lunch infrastructure. Lunch Monitors and their monthly $10 contribution support the Free Lunch efforts and comes with a subscription to their quarterly zine. The Free Lunch zine serves to document the hard work and community that goes into offering this valuable service to friends and neighbors in need. For more on how to support Free Lunch, click HERE.
