Literary Reading Series Spotlights The Talent of Austin Writers

Why There Are Words Austin, a quarterly series, features acclaimed writers reading their works to live audiences.

AUSTIN, TX -- As a recognized cultural hub, Austin's allure to artists and creatives is undeniable. A casual stroll around town tells the story of a city that prides itself on artistic expression. Ask anyone lucky enough to live in Austin, and they'll tell you there's a spark of creativity at every turn that makes the city feel electric.

That could explain why Austin has been called home to several famous authors who've contributed to shaping the literary landscape. From short story writer William Sydney Porter (best known as O. Henry) to political journalist Molly Ivins and Austin born-and-bred writer Julie Powell whose writings inspired the film Julie and Julia, the contributions from Austin's writers have left an indelible mark in history.

In an effort to foster the impact of literature in our communities and generate exposure to new or emerging writers, Malvern Books hosts a quarterly series Why There Are Words Austin -- an award-winning literary reading series founded in 2010 that began in San Francisco and over the course of several years expanded to eight cities across the country.
