AUSTIN, TX, April 18, 2022: For decades, doctors have been able to monitor a patient’s healthcare progress through electronic medical records (EMRs). Ironically, there was no way to measure the physicians who were caring for them and what happens to patients outside the exam room.

A new innovative technology platform adopted by more than 14 primary care practices across the country, uses artificial intelligence and other technology tools to usher in a new era of measuring physician productivity -- how efficiently and effectively a physician is meeting quality patient care standards. Called Physician Insights, this platform was created by agilon health, an organization that empowers physicians to transform healthcare in their communities. The platform aggregates and synthesizes data from multiple sources across multiple touchpoints syncing with EMR and payor platforms to present key indicators of physician performance in a digestible format.

“Physician Insights provides in-depth information about physician performance that can be turned into actionable programs to improve quality of care for senior patients,” says Kristin Oaks, D.O., a family physician at Central Ohio Primary Care who uses the agilon health program to coach physicians in her region. “Since it includes data from several sources, we also get a bird’s eye view of the overall health of the patient. Until now, we have never had a way to track a patient’s health outside of the exam room.”

The Physician Insights platform helps to measure how often primary care physicians are performing annual wellness visits, seeing chronically ill patients, and executing post-hospitalization appointments. It also shows whether physicians are appropriately referring to the best and most economical specialty physicians and how they are managing medications for patients. The data can be used across individual physicians, practices, and communities and provides opportunities for physicians to improve patient care.

“All of us fly somewhat blindly when it comes to estimating the quality of the care that we give,” says Lou Civitarese, D.O., Preferred Primary Care Physicians of Pittsburgh, PA. “There's nothing like credible data to put in front of any physician, including myself. It's always enlightening to see there is room for improvement.”

This level of insight is increasingly important in the value-based care arena that rewards physicians based on the overall well-being of their patients. The Physician Insights platform helps practices better understand the opportunities for physician growth and development, gives them the insights to improve the financial viability of practices, but most importantly achieve the best outcomes for senior patients.
