Pandemic EBT Helps Families Feed Children During Pandemic

Emergency program provides assistance to families of children eligible for free or reduced-price meals dealing with school closures.

AUSTIN, TX —The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved over $1 billion in pandemic food benefits to families with children that that have temporarily lost access to free or reduced-price school meals as a result of school closures due to COVID-19. Eligible families may apply for a one-time payment for each child who previously received free or reduced meals via the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) with families receiving a one-time cash benefit of $285 per child.

P-EBT offers the same type of benefit as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and provides assistance to families in need during the COVID-19 public health crisis. P-EBT is administered by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, Texas Department of Agriculture and Texas Education Agency, with P-EBT applications open for families through July 31, 2020.
