Pedestrian Killed Trying To Cross Interstate 35 Identified

AUSTIN, TX — Police on Friday identified the pedestrian who was killed while trying to cross Interstate 35 last weekend.

The incident dates to Friday, July 10, just after 4:30 a.m. along the 11800 block of North Interstate 35. Police said the driver of a 2016 Hyundai Elantra was southbound in the center lane when the pedestrian attempted to cross the roadway from west to east before being struck by the car.

Despite life-saving measures by medica, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at 4:53 a.m. He was identified as 23-year-Pold Roberto Luna Pantoja.

Police said the driver remained on scene to cooperate with a police investigation, and no charges were expected to be filed.

Police said the incident marked the city's 42nd fatal traffic crash of 2020, resulting in 45 fatalities this year. At this time in 2019, police added, there were 40 traffic fatalities.
