AUSTIN, TX — Police on Monday identified 40 people who were arrested during recent protests against law enforcement that have taken place in downtown Austin since late May.

Protests have been sparked across the country after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, who died on May 25 after an officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes. Those calling for police reform in Austin already had been galvanized following the death of Michael Ramos outside a South Austin apartment complex on April 24. Ramos was fatally shot by an officer as he drove away following a brief confrontation with police despite having shown he was unarmed.

Since then, protesters in Austin have taken to the downtown streets to demonstrate against police brutality while calling for stripping officers of certain duties — dealing with the homeless or those in the throes of mental health crises, to name two examples — as part of a movement to defund police of those tasks.
