Public Memorial Scheduled For Former Austin Mayor Gus Garcia

Memorial will be held at Austin City Hall on Jan. 5.

AUSTIN, TX -- A public memorial has been scheduled for former Mayor Gus Garcia to be held in Austin on January 5. Garcia, Austin's first Hispanic mayor, died earlier this month at the age of 84.

Garcia's prolific civic and political career spanned over 40 years and included serving as the first Hispanic member of the Austin school board. Soon after, he assumed the role of becoming the board's first Hispanic president. Elected in 2001, Garcia served as Austin's mayor through 2003.

In recognition of the important contributions Garcia made to the community, several Austin buildings including Garcia Middle School bear his name.
