Here are the top stories in Austin today:
- Austin's metro population is expected to double within the next decade, and with more people comes more traffic. The city is attempting to incentivize the use of public transit–so far to relatively little success. Before the pandemic began only 4-5% of residents commuted on public transit, a number which has most likely decreased since then. At the same time, transit activists described the city as at an "inflection point," stating that it has potential to change its car-centric image. (Reuters)
- Speaking of traffic, Austin's new $150 million Project Connect plan to build a new light-rail network through town goes hand-in-hand with the expansion–rather than elimination–of its highways. (Slate)
- Austin City Councilman Greg Casar announced that he's forming an exploratory committee for a Congressional run in Texas District 35–this comes after Democrat Lloyd Doggett said he would run in District 37. On City Council Casar fought for a $15 minimum wage, paid sick leave, and closed loopholes used by luxury property owners. (Austin Patch)
- 2 Adults and 1 Child were found dead in a triple homicide in SE Austin. This story is still developing, and police are asking residents to be in contact with any additional information. (Austin Patch)
- The original Nutty Brown Amphitheater location is set to close in November, and will move to a larger location in Southwest Austin by 2023. The developer behind the project said they hope it will solidify the city's ‘Live Music Capital of the World’ status. (KVUE.com)
