RV Fire At Austin Homeless Community Blamed On Smoking

Bystanders were able to extricate a sleeping occupant of the recreational vehicle at the Community First Village in eastern Travis County.

AUSTIN, TX — A fire inside a recreational vehicle at Community First Village was blamed on improperly discarded smoking materials, the fire department said on Friday.

The Austin Fire Department tweeted photos of the damaged RV just after 12:30 p.m., writing that an occupant was asleep when the fire started. Two bystanders went inside the RV to pull the occupant out, firefighters added. All three were evaluated by EMTs at the scene.

Firefighters noted there was no working smoke alarm inside the RV at the time of the fire.

The RV was parked at Community First Village, a 51-acre master planned community that provides affordable, permanent housing and a supportive community for men and women emerging from chronic homelessness. A development of Mobile Loaves & Fishes, the development is located at 9301 Hog Eye Rd. in the eastern part of the county.

No injuries were reported.
