Scooter Rider Killed In Downtown Austin, Driver Faces DWI Charge

Police said Gerardo Rene Barlow, 32, was driving along an Interstate 35 service road when he fatally struck Steven Lamont Hill, 43.

AUSTIN, TX — Police on Thursday identified the man who was killed while riding a scooter in downtown Austin on Dec. 4 as well as the driver accused of driving while intoxicated in connection to the incident.

The incident occurred around 10:51 p.m. along the 11500 block of North Interstate 35 service road, according to a police report. A police investigation showed that that Gerardo Rene Barlow, 32, was driving a white, 2017 Chevrolet Malibu southbound in the outside lane of traffic when he struck Steven Lamont Hill, 43, who was riding a scooter in the same lane.

Hill died at the scene, police said. Police said they found Barlow at a nearby acquaintance's residence where he was arrested.

The incident marked Austin’s 81st fatal traffic crash of 2020, police said, resulting in 85 fatalities this year. At this time in 2019, police added, there were 80 traffic fatalities.
