Special Deals For Leap Year Babies Abound In Austin Area

AUSTIN, TX — It's not easy being a leapling — one of about 205,000 people born on Feb. 29, also known as Leap Day, in the U.S. A year without that extra day this month yields a ready excuse for some not to give birthday gifts, and endless taunts of how young one looks for one's age abound given the tyranny of chronology for the few who wait years for their birthday to arrive.

But there's hope, Leap Year babies. Some merchants are offering specials for this minority, including the Typhoon Texas water park in Pflugerville and the chain of Olive Garden restaurants. Feb. 29 falls on a Sunday this year.

TYPHOON TEXAS

Park operators are giving away free season passes to anyone born on Feb. 29, officials revealed on Monday. Those qualifying are asked to bring any government-issued ID to the Typhoon Texas ticket windows on Saturday, Feb. 29 from noon to 3 p.m. to redeem their free season pass for the 2020 season.

“Those born on February 29 get to celebrate their actual birthday only once every four years, so they deserve something special,”Ty Weitzel, general manager of Typhoon Texas, said in a prepared statement.

Season pass holders enjoy unlimited admission to both Typhoon Texas waterparks in Austin and Houston, early entry 30 minutes before the parks open and discounts on food, non-alcoholic drinks, fast passes, Cabanas, retail purchase and any-day guest tickets.

The Typhoon Texas Leap Year offer is non-transferable and can only be redeemed at the waterpark located at 18500 TX-130 Service Road in Pflugerville.

Olive Garden is gifting their ‘Leapling’ guests with four free Dolicinis to make up for those lost birthday years. Olive Garden will also be offering $2.29 Take Home entrées to all guests on February 29. Take Home entrées include a choice between Fettuccine Alfredo, Five Cheese Ziti al Forno and Spaghetti with Meat Sauce. Note: All additional Take Home entrées, after the first order, will be $5.
