The Purpose of the Community Meeting
The State Board of Education (SBOE), under Texas law, is required to adopt a Long-Range Plan for Public Education. To help the board gather information that will shape the new plan and set long term goals through the year 2030, it is holding public community meetings around the state.

SBOE recently appointed the Long-Range Plan for Public Education Steering Committee; this 18-member steering committee is made up of state board members, various stakeholder group representatives and representatives from three state agencies. The steering committee will offer a recommendation for long-term goals for Texas schools and will identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges of the system.
The recommendations prepared by the steering committee, as well as information gathered from the community meetings and an online survey, will be considered by the board when it ultimately adopts the long-range plan. Adoption of a new long-range plan is tentatively scheduled for Fall 2018.
Agenda Details
During the evening meeting, participants will discuss four broad topics:
1. Student Engagement and Empowerment
2. Educator Preparation, Recruitment, and Retention
3. Equity and Access
4. Family Engagement and Empowerment
Additional education topics may be discussed if time permits.
