Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Makes Presidential Endorsement

Abbott is sticking with his Texas roots after the GOP field has been whittled down.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has endorsed the senator from his home state, Ted Cruz, for president, he announced in a video posted Wednesday to Cruz’s YouTube channel.

“After eight years of relentless attacks on our values from this White House, it’s our duty as Texas conservatives to support a leader we can trust to restore our values and move this country forward,” Abbott said in the video. “That’s why I’m supporting Ted Cruz for president.”

Abbott and Cruz worked together from 2003 to 2008, when Abbott was the state’s attorney general, and he appointed Cruz to be solicitor general.

Cruz left the position to practice law privately for four years before returning to politics as the state’s junior U.S. Senator.

“Unlike far too many in Washington, the Ted Cruz we’ve seen in the Senate is the same Ted Cruz we elected,” Abbott said in the endorsement video.

Cruz is polling in a statistical deadlock with Donald Trump in Texas, according to the latest poll conducted in the state, released Wednesday by the Emerson College Polling Society.

The poll shows Cruz at 29 percent, Trump at 28 percent and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio at 25 percent, with a 4.6-percent margin of error.

Cruz narrowly won the Iowa Caucuses but hasn’t finished higher than third in any voting since.

The next votes will be cast in the GOP field on Tuesday, March 1, when 12 states will hold Republican elections, including Texas.
