UT-Austin Alert To Shooting Was False: Campus Police

Police said there was no threat to the campus after a fake message was inadvertently sent to community members alerting to shots fired.

AUSTIN, TX — A test message inadvertently sent to UT-Austin community members late Thursday morning alerting to shots fired was a false alarm, campus police said.

The fake message alerted to multiple shots fired at the Texas Union Building. But the message was false and not meant for dissemination, police said in a tweet sent out just after 11 a.m.

"A false message went out reporting multiple shots fired at UNB," police wrote. "The message was a test and was not meant to be sent publicly. This was a false alarm and there is no threat to campus."
