UT-Austin Grad, Houston Native Killed In Kenya Terrorist Attack

Jason Spindler, a UT-Austin graduate in 2000, was killed Tuesday while he was at a luxury hotel and shopping complex targeted by gunmen.

AUSTIN, TEXAS — A University of Texas at Austin finance graduate was among the 14 people killed in a terrorist attack on Tuesday, according to published reports.

Jason Spindler, a UT-Austin graduate in 2000, was killed while he was at a luxury hotel and shopping complex targeted by gunmen, according to reports. His LinkedIn and Facebook accounts references his having studied finance and economics while at UT-Austin. He had been living in San Francisco, helping to launch I-DEV International, a company that launches businesses worldwide, according to reports.

Chris Schroeder paid tribute to his fallen friend on Twitter: "He chose a life of hope and inclusion. I am grateful to have known and learned from him."

The UT-Austin McCombs School of Business released a statement of condolence, posting it on Twitter: "We are saddened about the death of Jason Spindler who was killed in the Kenyan terror attack this week. Jason was a Finance graduate. Our hearts and prayers are with his family and loved ones."

Spindler's brother, Jonathan, confirmed the death in a Facebook post: "It’s with a heavy heat that I have to report that my brother, Jason Spindler passed away this morning during a terror attack in Nairobi, Kenya. Jason was a survivor of 9-11 and a fighter. I am sure he gave them hell.”

Family member have told media outlets that Spindler reflexively joined the Peace Corps in the immediate aftermath of 911. The Associated Press reported the extremist group Al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for the attack.
