AUSTIN, TX — Whatadeal! To celebrate its 70th anniversary, Whataburger is offering a buy-one-get-one-free hamburger deal through Sunday.

Yes, Whataburger fans, you read that correctly. Details can be found on the iconic burger chain's website. The only catch is the offer is for online or app orders only. The offer is redeemable by presenting the offer when ordering by opening the barcode on said Whataburger app or online order, officials explained.

Actually, there's another catch (but a delicious one at that): The order must include at least one No. 1 Whataburger, with add-ons offered for an additional fee. The offer is limited to one per person, officials added. Orders can be made by signing into an existing Whataburger account or in creating a new account by downloading the Whataburger App.

A regional favorite, Whataburgeris based in neighboring San Antonio after the first store opened in Corpus Christi back in 1950 by Harmon Dobson and Paul Burton. Today, the chain has become a beloved institution with a devotion among aficionados that borders on religion.

That devotion is often highlighted when Texas couples exchange nuptials at their neighborhood Whataburger restaurants in cementing dual devotion both to burgers and their betrothed in one fell swoop. The two-for-one deal being offered could yield a romantic dinner for couples who have gotten hitched the Whataburger way.

Extending the sense of hallowed, sacrosanct ground further, the chain earlier this year — before the doldrums of coronavirus forced many of us to stay home in practicing social distancing — launched a contest for an all-expense paid ceremony to a lucky couple agreeing to exchange vows on Valentine's Day. In sweetening the pot (or the griddle, as the case might be), one winning couple was awarded a $5,000 cash prize to help cover honeymoon costs.

The burger chain made further news this week in announcing the launch a food truck option to coincide with its 70th anniversary. Emblazoned in the chain's familiar orange and white colors, each 36-foot truck contains 24 feet of cooking space powered by a 30,000-watt generator, officials described on the Whataburger website.

“We wanted a way to connect even more with our communities and to introduce Whataburger to new customers in a new and exciting way,” Rich Scheffler, vice president of marketing and innovation for Whataburger said in a prepared statement. “And this truck is a showstopper.”

Officials added to the description of what they call "goodness on wheels" on the website: "Thirty laminated vinyl panels wrap it from bumper to bumper, featuring burgers so realistic you can almost smell the sizzle. LED lights give the truck a distinctive glow, and the custom grill featuring the Flying W adds another layer of swagger."

Sheffler added that plans for the mobile eateries have been in the works for years. “But we didn’t want it to roll out of the garage until it could turn heads and bring our restaurant quality food to the road. This truck fits the bill.”

Sadly, it won't be until next year that the trucks hit the road. In 2021, officials explained, the truck will hit the road for a multi-state tour, with stops in Whataburger's existing markets and cities. "As the brand expands into new markets, the truck will give new locations and fans a taste of what’s coming," officials wrote. "What’s more, it will be available to help during natural disasters and emergency events, where a hot Whataburger meal can help make a difference."

Whatabummer! But, hey, it's something to look forward to, Whataburger fans. Whatadelayedgratification, eh?
