Austin Airport Installs Exhibition Centered On Key WWII Figure Adm. Chester W. Nimitz
Longtime Fredericksburg, Texas, resident distinguished himself in Battle of Midway, served as as Commander in Chief of Naval Operations.
AUSTIN, TX — An exhibit honoring area World War II key figure Adm. Chester W. Nimitz is currently on display at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
Titled 50 Years in Fredericksburg, the exhibit in the East Airside Gallery (behind the Austin Article near Gate 8) will be shown until Dec. 31. The gallery is located in the Barbara Jordan Terminal past security checkpoints and available to ticketed passengers only.
The exhibit that showcases former Fredericksburg resident Nimitz, who distinguished himself in the Battle of Midway and served as as the Commander in Chief of Naval Operations during WWII, also shows the history of the National Museum of the Pacific War from the beginning. Additionally, passengers can see how the Fredericksburg museum has grown and expanded from its original site of the Nimitz Hotel to today’s six-acre complex with Memorial Courtyard, Plaza of Presidents, Japanese Garden of Peace and a regular schedule of educational programming and re-enactments.

The museum has distinguished itself as the only institution in the U.S. dedicated exclusively to telling the story of the Pacific and Asiatic Theaters in World War II. Born Feb. 24, 1885, in Fredericksburg, Texas, Nimitz was a fleet admiral of the U.S. Navy, playing a major role in the naval history of World War II. His grandfather's former hotel in Fredericksburg is now the Admiral Nimitz State Historic Site. Nimitz died Feb. 20, 1966.
