Filigree Theater In East Austin To Stage 2nd Production
City's female-driven artistic company staging 'A Delicate Ship,' with characters flirting over wine ahead of thoughts on existentialism.

EAST AUSTIN, TX — The Filigree Theater, Austin's newest female-driven theater company, will stage its second production of its inaugural season next week.
"A Delicate Ship" by Anna Ziegler will be staged at the Santa Cruz Theater located at 1805 E. 7th St. for a ten-day run starting Feb. 15. Co-Founded by Elizabeth V. Newman (artistic director/co-managing director) and Stephanie Moore (co-managing director), The Filigree Theatre produces high-level, professional theater and collaborates with local artists working across creative disciplines — fine arts, dance, film and music.
Theater officials provided a synopsis of "A Delicate Ship" to Patch: "It’s Christmas Eve, and Sarah and Sam are celebrating like New Yorkers: flirting over wine and debating the nature of existential suffering. Then there is knock on the door, and Sarah’s childhood friend Nate stands at the threshold. And suddenly suffering becomes a whole lot less sexy. A kaleidoscopic look at one night in New York City that changes the lives of three people forever."

The term filigree from which the company derives its name is defined as “the complex intertwining of delicate threats of gold and silver,” and serves as the basis for the company’s dual mission: to serve both as a ‘thread’ by connecting Austin to theater communities in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and London, as well as a ‘seed’ by incubating, supporting and celebrating emerging theater makers in Austin, officials said. The Filigree Theater is likewise dedicated to forging connections with diverse audiences across the region, officials added.
In terms of Newman and Moore, both have structured each season of The Filigree Theater to be composed of three shows connecting the “Past” (honoring the theater canon), “Present” (playwrights living and working today) and “Future” (world premieres and new works) that are tied together with a common theme that runs throughout, officials described. For The Filigree Theater's 2017-18 inaugural season, the theme is “Trios” and the three productions are (Past) Betrayal by Harold Pinter (Sept. 28-Oct. 8); (Present) A Delicate Ship by Anna Ziegler (Austin Premiere; Feb. 15-25); and (Future) Trio by Sheila Cowley (World Premiere; Apr. 26-May 6), according to Filigree Theater officials.
