Old Thousand Chinese Restaurant In East Austin Launches Lunch Service

Those in the know are overjoyed by the news, likely to line up for lunch at popular eatery offering 'dope Chinese' carryout bags.

EAST AUSTIN, TX — In news that will largely resonate with East Austin residents, the Old Thousand Chinese restaurant has added lunch service.

The eatery launched its lunch service at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Austin 360 reports. Dubbed a "hip-hop loving restaurant" by the blog (the East Austin cognoscenti will know about this), the restaurant will serve buns, egg rolls, brisket fried rice, and more, according to the food blog.

On Facebook, restaurant officials noted another menu offering: Flat noodle with 44 Farms Beef, Cauliflower and Cumin-Sweet Soy.

This place is quintessentially East Austin, in all its eccentric glory. As reviewer Matthew Odam wrote for the Austin American-Statesman in March, the carryout bags are branded as "dope Chinese." There is no air of pretension in this branding, no claims to authentic Szechuan or other nods to haute cuisine, as the food reviewer suggested. It's just "dope."

If that weren't enough to appeal to the hip crowd to which it caters, there is an oversize portrait of a panda bear that's blinged out a la Notorious B.I.G. Enough said.

The restaurant, from Uchiko veteran James Dumapit and Uchi alumnus David Baek, is located at 1100 E. 11th St.
