Mayor Steve Adler is hosting the event to talk about the needs and struggles in East Austin.

Austin Mayor Steve Adler will host a “Spirit of East Austin” forum on Sept. 12 to talk about the future of East Austin.

The invitation, which is free and open to the public, asks Austinites to “share your hopes, needs, struggles, and ideas. How might individuals, communities and local government mobilize to ensure a brighter future for all?”

There will be short presentations and small-group discussions during the 3-hour event, which will be held at Travis County Exposition Center at 7311 Decker Lane.

“This is an opportunity for our community to identify the assets, opportunities and challenges in a part of our City that has been long neglected. It is my hope that short, mid and long range goals will be identified to implement equitable, economic and employment opportunities in our community,” Council Member Ora Houston said in a statement. “Historically, there have been master plans, conversations and requests; however, nothing has ever been done. This time the conversation is about strategic action.”

There will also be supervised children’s activities. The event organizers are also asking residents to bring a photo or object or piece of art to share your memories of East Austin.
