Former President George H.W. Bush has moved to a regular patient room, where doctors are 'very pleased with his progress.'

HOUSTON, TX — George H.W. Bush is no longer in the intensive care ward at Houston Methodist Hospital, a family spokesperson stated Wednesday. Jim McGrath said the former president continues to recover in a regular patient room, and he's expected to be there several more days.

Here's the statement released Wednesday:

"President George H. W. Bush has been moved from the intensive care unit at to a regular patient room, and is expected to continue his recovery there for several more days. He is alert and talking with hospital staff, family and friends, and his doctors are very pleased with his progress.

President Bush naturally thanks everyone for their prayers and good wishes. He also wants to assure everyone that, as good as he feels now, he is more focused on the Houston Rockets closing out their playoff series against the Minnesota Timberwolves than anything that landed him in the hospital."

He was admitted on Sunday morning, not even 24 hours after the burial of Barbara Bush, his wife of 73 years. His office released a statement Monday that said the 41st president is responding to treatments and he appears to be recovering. Family spokesman Jim McGrath said Tuesday that Bush is conscious and talking. Bush even has vacation plans this summer.

"The 41st President wants to go to Maine this summer. He's the most goal-oriented person on the planet, and I would not bet against him," McGrath said.

His wife of 73 years, Barbara Pierce Bush, died last Tuesday at her River Oaks home. A service was held for her on Saturday, and she was laid to rest at the Bush Library and Museum in College Station Saturday afternoon.
