Houston Bans Homeless Encampments, Panhandling In Medians
City Council action comes on heels of Mayor Sylvester Turner's homeless/safety initiative.
HOUSTON, TX — Reacting to complaints of panhandling from the public, The Houston City Council on Wednesday banned public encampments. The council also passed ordinances that made blocking sidewalks, building entrances, and roadways illegal, and banned panhandling in medians.
"I am pleased that we are addressing this important public safety issue in our city, council member Mike Knox said in a statement. "Panhandling in streets is dangerous to both panhandlers and motorists." Knox was the sponsor of the amendment that called for the banning of panhandling in medians.
The new regulations will come into effect in 30 days.
