Funeral Services Announced For Slain Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal

Both the religious and the law enforcement ceremony are open the public on Wednesday, October 2.

HOUSTON, TX — The funeral service for Sandeep Dhaliwal, the 42-year-old Harris County sheriff's deputy who was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop, will take place on Wednesday.

Dhaliwal was the first Sikh member of the force and in 2015, he was granted permission to wear a turban and keep a beard while on duty. Dhaliwal made national headlines when he was granted permission to keep the outward symbols of his faith while on duty.

The funeral will be held at the Berry Center, located at 8877 Barker Cypress Road in Cypress. The Sikh religious ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. followed by the law enforcement ceremony at 11:30 a.m.

According to the Harris County sheriff's office, the public is welcome to attend both ceremonies dependent on space. The center has a capacity to hold 7,200 visitors. Doors for the ceremony will open at 9:30 a.m.

If the event exceeds capacity, Cy-Fair FCU Stadium, which can hold 11,000 people, will be used as a spillover location and the services will be broadcast on the big screen. The services will also be livestreamed. (You can watch a livestream of the services on Patch)

Donations for the slain deputy's family can be made in Dhaliwal's name via the to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Benevolence Association. Donations can also be made through GoFundMe.

Dhaliwal was a 10 year veteran of the department and he leaves behind a wife and three children.
