HOUSTON, TX — Houston voters overwhelmingly favored a $3.5 billion bond proposal intended to fund METRO projects with the aim of improving public transportation systems and easing traffic congestion in the city.

Unofficial early voting totals and all results from election day showed that the proposal had large support among voters. According to the latest information from the county, all 757 of 757 voting centers were reporting results for Tuesday's election. The unofficial showed that 67.86 percent of voters favored the proposal as opposed to 32.14 percent of voters who voted against it.

It was already known that the proposal was popular among voters. According to a Houston Public Media/KHOU poll conducted in September, 60 percent of registered voters said they would vote in favor of the proposal while a third remained undecided.

In an editorial, The Houston Chronicle's editorial board recommended that voters say yes to the proposal.

"Metro has promised to add the borrowed billions to a giant plan for the future, dubbed MetroNext, and all together the $7.5 billion spending plan is an enormous step forward for the agency and for the city," the Chronicle's board wrote. "We strongly urge Houston voters to support this first step, by voting yes on the ballot proposition to give Metro permission to issue the bonds it needs."
