Houston Taco Truck Lauded by Austin's Taco Brothers

The duo, who have eaten the Mexican staple all over Texas, have high praise for Tierra Caliente's barbacoa.

Mando Rayo and Jared Neece call themselves the Taco Brothers, and have published Tacos of Texas and Austin Tacos: The Story of the Most Important Taco of the Day, books devoted to the Mexican speciality loved by one and all. They travel up and down Texas, eating tacos in Odessa and New Braunfels and everywhere else they go. They know their tortillas and barbacoa and trompo.

The duo this week released their list of the best tacos they ate in 2006, and a Houston favorite made the cut in the barbacoa category. It's Tacos Tierra Caliente, a food truck that is stationed across the street from West Alabama Ice House, and the truck's loyal following keeps its owners busy.

Houston has its share of great tacos, of course, and Rayo says it is his favorite city for tacos in Texas (Neece loves Laredo). I, too, love the barbaco at Tierra Caliente, and would add the tacos at Gerardo's to the list. Other taco joints Rayo and Neece's Best of 2016 list include Dallas' Trompo and Laredo's Taco Palenque.
