Texas, There Will Be Frigid Weather: Forecaster Warns Chilly Conditions Are On the Way

An Arctic air mass is headed south, bringing with it high winds and cold mornings.

Canada is sending a present to much of Texas, and it's scheduled to arrive in mid-December. But don't expect a gift box full of maple syrup and hockey equipment. Do, however, get your coats and gloves out of storage.

Brooks Garner, a meteorologist with KHOU in Houston, has looked at his weather maps, and what he sees promises holiday-like conditions for the Bayou City and other regions of the state in about 10 days.

"My best guess this far out is that Houston will see highs in the 40s with lows in the mid-20s from Huntsville to Conroe, with low 30s from Houston to mid-30s in Galveston. Unlike 'typical' cold mornings in Houston when you see lots of frost around, the breeze won't be calm. It'll be windy!," Garner says. "Wind chills could make it feel like its in the teens, as they rip out of the north at some 15-25 mph. This could be the coolest weather Houston has seen in some time."

The Arctic air mass on its way from Canada in about a week will bring sub-zero temperatures far south — St. Louis, get ready — but Garner says that Houston's proximity to the Gulf's warm waters makes it highly unlikely that the city will experience a hard freeze.

And for those hoping for a white Christmas? Keep dreaming, because the chances for that are slim to none.
