Houston Woman Set On Fire While Sleeping On A Sidewalk

A homeless woman is in critical condition after she was doused with a flammable liquid and set ablaze while she slept on a sidewalk.

HOUSTON — A homeless woman is in critical condition after someone doused her with lighter fluid and set her ablaze, police said. The incident was reported at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday at 4252 Kirkwood Road in southwest Houston.

Police said the 40-year-old woman was asleep on a sidewalk at a southwest Houston strip center when someone doused her with an accelerant and set her on fire.

A passerby who saw the woman on fire, extinguished the flames and called EMS. The woman was taken to Memorial Hermann Medical Center in critical condition, and is expected to survive her injuries, officials said.

Police are reviewing video surveillance from nearby businesses and hope to identify a suspect in this case. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477) or the HPD Major Assaults & Family Violence Division at 713-308-8800.
