Houston's Top Weekend Gigs: A Songwriter's Songwriter and an Italian Tenor Bring Their Games

The Bayou City is full of great music, from rock to zydeco to bluegrass, and Patch keeps you in the know

HOUSTON, TX — We've got a stellar lineup of music for you this weekend, starting with James McMurtry (son of the great writer Larry) at McGonigel's Mucky Duck on Saturday (two shows). McMurtry has written an amazing number of probing and thought-provoking songs, including "We Can't Make It Here" and "Copper Canteen," and any appearance of his should not be missed.

From one genre to a different one entirely: Andrea Bocelli plays Toyota Center on Sunday, and for those who can't get enough of his smooth tenor, this show will be the perfect way to close the weekend. He'll be joined by guest artist Katharine McPhee and soprano Ana Maria Martinez, so expect some romance and drama. "Time to Say Goodbye," anyone?

There's a little club in Houston with a large legacy, and it's called Anderson Fair. Lyle Lovett and Nanci Griffith (among many other greats) have played there, and though other clubs have seemingly eclipsed the Fair's spotlight, it still regularly boasts a strong calendar of shows. Tonight's appearance by Jeff Black is no exception. "His words and voice hold down centerstage with a craft so deeply in the artistic pocket that it obscures anything outside," wrote No Depression about Black, and that's good enough for me.

Finally, the Seratones descend upon White Oak Music Hall tonight. This band hails from Shreveport, Louisiana, and A.J. Haynes, the bands vocalist, is a marvel. Growling, crooning, playing the guitar ... you'll want to experience this. Their sound is rock, their delivery is engaging and infectious, and they'll make you dance. What more is needed?
