Houston's Weekend Concerts: Steve Forbert, Hayes Carll, and Beethoven

'Romeo's Tune' troubadour plays the Mucky Duck, while Ludwig's Emperor Concerto takes over Jones Hall

HOUSTON, TX — It's going to be a full weekend, what with MLK festivities, the Chevron Houston Marathon, and a holiday on Monday, but music in the Houston area is not taking a sojourn.

Tonight at the Dosey Doe Big Barn in The Woodlands, Hayes Carll will strut the stage, playing hits and otherwise. His latest album, Lovers and Leavers, is sure to be the focus, but you'll probably hear lots more from the Woodlands native. For tickets to the Hayes Carll show, click here.

On Saturday, the man who gave us "Romeo's Tune" back in the '80s returns to McGonigel's Mucky Duck, and this one will be a full house. Steve Forbert's from Mississippi, and I first heard his music when I was living in Germany — he became an internationally known artist. He's been around a long time, and his experience and talent show. Get your Forbert tickets here, and give this a look and listen:

For a change of pace, another great, this one with the name Beethoven. On Sunday, January 15, his Emperor Concerto will be performed by the Houston Symphony, with James Gaffigan conducting and Behzod Abduraimov making his debut with the symphony.

This was Beethoven's final piano concerto, and was written between 1809 and 1811 in Vienna. It is, of course, a classic, and one not to be missed. Get tickets here, and for a preview, take a look at Alfred Brendel playing the piece.
