New Yale Street Bridge To Open in Early 2017, About 10 Months Ahead of Schedule
Preservationists had fought to save the original structure, but project was deemed cost-prohibitive
HOUSTON, TX — The span first came into service in 1931, and years of traffic and wear took their toll, not to mention the ever-increasing weight of vehicles. In time, the structure was deemed unsafe. This April, the project to demolish Houston's Yale Street Bridge and replace it with a modern one began.
The Houston Chronicle reports that work on the project, located south of Interstate 10, will wrap up in February of 2017. Drivers will be breathing a sigh of relief at the news, as the construction has wreaked havoc on traffic in the area.
The new bridge features a path for bicyclists and pedestrians and costs $2.8 million, 80 percent of which came from the Federal Highway Bridge budget.
