Teen Charged In Girlfriend's Shooting Death Granted $75K Bond

Javon Martin was allegedly playing with a loaded rifle when he pointed it at Makaila Simon and shot her in the chest, according to police.

HOUSTON — Javon Martin, who is accused of shooting and killing his 15-year-old girlfriend at a party on Sunday, was granted $75,000 bond by a Harris County Judge.

Martin, who has been in custody since Sunday, is also required to wear an ankle monitor and is not permitted to contact the family of the young girl he is accused of killing once he is free.

Grief counselors were on hand at Lamar Lamar High School on Monday, the day after a 15-year-old student was shot and killed by her 17-year-old boyfriend at a party.

Police said Martin was playing with a loaded rifle when he pointed it at Makaila Simon and shot her in the chest. Simon died at the scene.

Harris County Sheriff's deputies were called to a home in the 23100 block of Kimberly Glen Lane. in Cypress at about 1:40 a.m. Sunday for a shooting.

Deputies arrived and found the girl dead from a single gunshot wound in her chest. Witnesses said Martin was playing with the weapon and shot Simon in the chest.

Martin told police he'd checked to make sure the weapon was not loaded after he took it out, but officials are not sure he checked properly, police said.

Martin was arrested and is charged with criminal negligent homicide. Martin is in the Harris County Jail. His bail is set at $10,000.
