Thousands Without Power As Storms Move Through Houston Area

Pockets of heavy rain knocked out power to about 60,000 CenterPoint customers and forced a ground stoppage at Bush Airport Thursday morning.

HOUSTON — A band of heavy rain moving through the Houston area left more than 60,000 homes and businesses without power Thursday morning. A swath of heavy to moderate rain began impacting areas of Harris, Montgomery, and Galveston Counties at about 4 a.m.

The storms knocked out power for thousands and forced a ground stoppage at Bush Intercontinental Airport.

CenterPoint Energy was able to restore power to at least 10,000 customers by 5 a.m., officials said in a tweet.

Officials said motorists can expect to see some minor street flooding in some areas of Houston during the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm system will move out of the Houston area before noon, bringing sunny skies for the Easter weekend.
