Great events happening this weekend include a backpack giveaway, Clear the Shelters, and a lot more.

HOUSTON, TX -- It’s the last weekend before many schools districts open their doors to thousands of Houston area students, and families will be looking for that one last fun thing to do this weekend. Here are some of of the top family friendly events happening in the Houston area this weekend.
Lyrics and Lawn Games At Sugar Land Town Square| Friday 7:30-9:30 p.m.| Free| Wind down from the week with family fun lawn games and country music. There will be beer and wine for $5.
Evening Chill At Houston Zoo| Friday and Saturday| Enjoy the animal exhibits, awesome music and a ton of family-friendly events when the sun goes down. Admission is $11.

Clear the Shelters| Saturday, Aug. 18| NBC and Telemundo are teaming up for this nationwide event to find forever homes for stray dogs and cats. The adoptions fee, which include spaying and neutering will be waived in many cases. You can find participating animal shelters in Houston, Pasadena, Conroe, Sugar Land, League City, Pearland, Baytown, The Woodlands, and many more.
Houston Food Fest at Hermann Park| Saturday noon-10p.m.| Tickets are $5| Tasty bites galore from 79 different vendors will delight your taste buds. When you’re full you can enjoy the live music and dance off the calories.

Back-to-School Block Party| Saturday 11 a.m. to 1 p.m at Tidwell Park| Hundreds of families will flock to Tidwell Park to gear up for the school year with free immunizations, a backpack giveaway, appearance by DJ Mr. Rogers and more at Vice Mayor Pro-Tem Jerry Davis’s Back to School Block Party. Students of all ages are invited to attend this free event with their families to enjoy live performances, food from McDonald’s, haircuts, family-friendly games, health screenings, and a concert from 20.10 Media.
Houston Texans vs. San Francisco 49ers| Saturday 7 p.m.| Texas play their preseason opener against the San Francisco 49ers.
Sugar Land Superstar Finale | Saturday 7:30-9:30 p.m.| Sugar Land Town Square| Pack up your lawn chairs and head to the Plaza and enjoy our American Idol-Like Competition Final, sponsored by David Taylor Cadillac, where one lucky winner will be named the 2016 Sugar Land Superstar! YOU get to help us choose the winner via text voting at the end of the competition.
Houston Dynamo vs. Real Salt Lake at BBVA Compass Stadium| Saturday at 8 p.m.| Tickets $29| Cheer on the Dynamo as they play Real Salt Lake.
Chimney Rock Market| Sunday noon-4 p.m.| A cool outdoor market held the first and third Sunday of every month that features local artists and farmers.
Kizomba Practica at Avant Garden| Sunday 6-10 p.m.| A cool Angolan dance mixer. Tickets start at $5.
