Where to Adopt a Pet in Houston for the Holidays
Adoption opportunities—from speed "dating" to photo ops with Saint Nick—are abound in Houston, and Patch knows where to find them.

HOUSTON, TX - Affordable pet adoption means more adopted pets, but committing oneself to research breeders and shelters can be time-consuming. The Houston Patch has its readers covered with a collection of adoption days, where residents throughout the Houston area can spend time with and choose among a motley of pets seeking fur-ever homes.
- Natural Pawz, located at 5161 San Felipe St., will host pet adoption services Sunday, Dec. 4 from noon to 4 p.m. Natural Pawz prides itself as a resource to the Houston pet community and offers natural food and supplies.
- Petco hosts pet adoption Saturday, Dec. 10 from noon to 4 p.m. Located at 11615 S. Sam Houston Parkway East, Petco celebrates the ability to provide forever homes to dogs, puppies, cats and kittens in need of adoption.

- BARC's next Waggy Wednesday is set for Nov. 30. Waggy Wednesdays are open adoption events wherein pet adoption is available for $5, as sponsored by Proler Southwest Inc. BARC has set out to reach a 90 percent live release rate throughout the months of November and December as well as January 2017, an effort marked by BARC's goal to place 90 percent of the animals in its care during these months.
- The Houston Humane Society has planned a holiday speed-dating event for Saturday, Dec. 10, where single animal lovers will be able to sit down with and get to know a chosen cat or dog before proceeding to "date" with fellow attendees throughout organization grounds. Food and drinks will be provided, and Humane Society staff will be on hand to ensure experiences are comfortable and enjoyable. "Daters" will also have the opportunity to learn about adoption or volunteering for the Houston Humane Society.

- A bonus event comes in the form of free photos with Santa Claus at the Houston Humane Society's Audrey Jones Beck Adoption Center on Saturday, Dec. 3 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A second session will be held Dec. 10. The event will also feature the Humane Society's Pawliday Shopping Market and holiday bake sale. Donations of kong toys or pet food will be accepted.
Adopting a pet is a decision that shelters recommend being made with careful consideration. The Houston Humane Society encourages prospective owners to ask themselves a number of questions before committing to the adoption: Am I ready for a pet? Do I have time for a pet? Can I afford a pet?
