Wrong Way Driver Charged In Fatal DWI Crash

HOUSTON — A 36-year-old man accused of causing a fatal DWI crash has been charged with one count of intoxication manslaughter and one count of intoxication assault, officials said. Juan David Almanza is accused of driving is Chevy Silverado pickup the wrong way on Interstate 45 South, and crashing head-on into a Ford Mustang.

The crash happened at about 2:15 a.m. in the 1300 block of the North Freeway. Investigators said the driver of the Mustang, a 54-year-old man, was traveling south on I-45 with a female passenger when they were hit head-on.

The identity of the male victim is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His female passenger, 48, was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in an unknown condition.

Almanza was transported to St. Joseph's Medical Center in an unknown condition. He was determined to be intoxicated and subsequently charged for his role in the crash.
