1. Dallas-based Zalat Pizza will open its fifth Houston-area location in Tanglewood at 5750 Woodway Drive, Suite 118 on Tuesday, July 12. Pizzas include Nashville hot chicken and Pepperoni Masterclass. Doughs and sauces are made-from-scratch. (CultureMap Houston)

2. A Houston-area man charged in connection with the death of his common-law wife was arrested at the U.S.-Mexico border on Wednesday, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. Miguel Angel Gallegos, 24, is charged with murder in the death of 22-year-old Jael Gonzalez. (KHOU 11)

3. The City of Houston could soon be asked to return money after the General Land Office says that it missed almost all of the benchmarks for the city-administered Hurricane Harvey recovery program. Houston has already been told to return $52 million dollars. (ABC 13)

4. A warrant has been issued for a Houston area man accused of threatening to kill Texas Senator Ted Cruz and other Republican lawmakers over the party's 2022 platform related to voting rights. Isaac Ambe Nformangum, 22, did not show up to court on Friday and is facing a felony charge of terroristic threat for threatening violence and murder. (Click2Houston)

5. The heat index in Houston is expected to rise to 109 degrees today and 111 degrees Sunday. The high temperatures put people at a heightened risk of dehydration and to life-threatening illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. (Houston Patch)

  • District maps for the Lone Star College System were formally approved following around a six-month process after a June 29 meeting. (Community Impact News)
  • The mother of an abandoned baby has been found. Dana McGowan, 33, was taken into custody Thursday night for two felony warrants for DWI with a passenger under 15 years old from earlier this year and parole/probation violation. Detectives plan to interview her about the baby. (Fox 26)
  • CounterCommon Beerworks & Kitchen opened Friday, July 8 near the corner of Chimney Rock Road and Bellaire Boulevard in Bellaire. (Community Impact News)
