Houston 'Day Without Immigrants' Protests Close Area Restaurants

Torchy's Tacos, Pollo Bravo, Tacos A Go Go, and other eateries have shut their doors in observation of nationwide action.

HOUSTON, TX — People across the Houston area are protesting President Trump's recent travel ban and reports of raids carried out by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents by staying away from work and school.

"A Day Without Immigrants" observations have closed several Torchy's Tacos locations, as well as the Pollo Bravo restaurant located at 10434 Richmond Ave. and all Tacos A Go Go locations. In addition, a protest is scheduled to take place on Thursday evening beginning at 6 p.m. at Guadalupe Plaza.

The news about the closings has been met with differing opinions, with some people supporting the day of protest and others recommending, for example, that ICE agents pay a visit to the Torchy's Heights location tomorrow. One comment on the restaurant's Facebook page called on documented immigrants to take the jobs now held by undocumented residents:

ATTENTION UNEMPLOYED DOCUMENTED AMERICANS: today you can find a job that was once filled by illegal aliens. Most of the jobs that were taken by illegal aliens will be open because undocumented aliens will be taking a undocumented holiday. You must act quickly because positions are filling fast. If your job was taken by illegals this is your chance to take it back.

Other Houston-area closings include Natachee's Supper 'n Punch, whose owners posted the following note on its Facebook page:

"A Day Without Immigrants" protests are taking place around the nation, and in some cities, taxi service and other services are being affected.

Patch will be updating this story throughout the day; if you see a closing that's not on this list and should be, send us an email at Houston@Patch.com, and we'll make sure it is added.
