Houston ISD Closed Another Week; Classes To Start Sept. 11
Teachers and all other staff will report back on Sept. 8
HOUSTON, TX β The kids have another week off in the Houston ISD, which announced the first day of classes will begin Monday, Sept. 11, weather and facility conditions permitting. Hurricane Harvey's wrath caused widespread flooding and damage to many of the schools. Principals and administrative staff will report on Sept. 5, and teachers and other staff should report Sept. 8.
"We are eager to get our students back into the classroom and learning. We want to provide the stability of a routine, as well as the three nutritious meals a day that so many of our families depend on," said HISD Superintendent Richard Carranza. βBut we also need to be sure that our campuses are safe and that Houstonβs infrastructure and roads are ready to handle transporting our students safely to school. Our team is currently assessing any damages to our more than 280 schools from Hurricane Harvey, and I want to thank them for their efforts.β
In addition, HISDβs uniform policy will be relaxed until January 2018.

Essential personnel should check with their supervisor on reporting back to work. (Essential personnel includes nutrition services, police, transportation, facilities and construction services.)
"Team HISD is working hard to get our campuses ready to accept students, and we greatly appreciate all the work they are doing for our children β for Houstonβs children," said HISD Board President Wanda Adams. "We are a family, and together we are working to welcome our students back with open arms and provide them with a safe, nurturing learning environment in the wake of this devastating storm."
The first weekend of Friday high school football was also cancelled. HISD said they didn't know when those games would resume.
