Houston's Top Weekend Concerts: Jack Saunders, Arturo Sandoval, and The Oak Ridge Boys

On Bayou City stages: A trumpeting legend, a hometown troubadour, and a country and gospel supergroup.

HOUSTON, TX — We're ending a historic week, and today a new president is being sworn in. No matter how you voted, it's a done deal, and the next administration has begun. Now, how about some music for the weekend?

The Houston area is always alive with the sound of music, from rock to classical to country and punk. This weekend is no different, and we've got three diverse and excellent options lined up.

First, Houston's own Jack Saunders plays the Mucky Duck on Saturday, January 21, at 7 p.m.. If you are familiar with his talents, I don't need to say much more. If you are not, however, first, go to this show. Second, Saunders is a veteran, a man with experience who writes and plays from a life lived to the fullest. Watch "Riverbank Hideaway" below, and go see Saunders.

Next, the legendary Arturo Sandoval hits the stage at the Cullen Theater at the Wortham tonight at 8 p.m. He's a 10-time Grammy winner, and a musician's musician. His trumpet is known around the world, and any chance to see him live should not be missed. He was born in 1949 in Cuba, and in 2013 was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama. As I said, he is a legend. Da Camera, one of my favorite institutions in Houston, has brought him in this weekend, so do this. (At time of publication, tickets were scarce, but Da Camera will be standing by to release any unused tickets; call 713-524-5050 for updates.)

Finally, legends of a different sort. The Oak Ridge Boys have sold millions of albums, and were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2015. You know their hits, and their voices. This weekend they are in Galveston, at The Grand 1894 Opera House, for two shows Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. They will, of course, sing "Elvira," and many more, including gospel tunes. Expect a full house for this one.
