UH Regents Approve Creation Of A College Of Medicine
First class of UH Med School would be 2020

HOUSTON, TX β As the population continues to swell in Texas, and particularly the Greater Houston area, the demand for jobs in the medical field will grow as well. The University of Houston Board of regents took a step toward doing their part as they approved a new College of Medicine. Students could begin classes by Fall of 2020.
"Training the next generation of physician leaders meets a clear and growing demand in Texas," UH President Renu Khator said in a press release. "A new medical school will complement, not compete with other strong institutions already in place. We have an obligation to serve the city by responding to the economic, social and cultural issues affecting the quality of life in Houston."
Officials expect 480 students and 130 faculty and support staff at full enrollment, with 103 first-year residents to the area by 2020 and expand to 309 positions by 2024. Currently, UH has health professional training in nursing, pharmacy, optometry and social work. The school expects to partner with the Hospital Corporation of America's Gulf Coast Division
