Everyone who regularly drives into and out of Kingwood on Kingwood Drive is familiar with the traffic congestion that has become routine during certain times of the day as Kingwood has grown. However, every once in a while, there occurs a massive traffic jam caused by a traffic light malfunction at the front of Kingwood at the intersection of Kingwood Drive and Loop 494, located adjacent to the Union Pacific railroad crossing. The stop lights in all four directions shine red at the same time, as if there is a train coming, but the train has long since passed. The lights just stay red and never recycle. The result is a traffic jam that in minutes can grow for miles on Kingwood Drive all the way to West Lake Houston Parkway and beyond. When it happens, it ties the whole community up in knots and results in long delays, short tempers and often criticism by residents of how the Houston Police Department (HPD) gets the traffic going again in a timely manner. Finding the apparent cause has been as elusive as it has been random but it has now been found and confirmed following a recent massive traffic tie up.
