Commissioner Clark Asks For Budget Cuts For Montgomery County

Commissioner Jim Clark is asking for a homestead exemptions and a 5 percent budget cut for residents.

From Montgomery County Commissioner: After a thorough review of county spending, Precinct 4 Commissioner Jim Clark is also asking Montgomery County to provide relief for taxpayers through a general homestead exemption as well as a 5 percent budget reduction.

β€œI am asking that all Montgomery County Department Heads identify the areas through which such a budget reduction is possible,” said Commissioner Clark. β€œAfter much thought and deliberation with the residents of my precinct, they are feeling the burden of these taxes and the only way we can provide relief is through serious spending reform.”

A 5 percent budget cut across every Montgomery County department would reduce its total budget by nearly $17 million. Commissioner Clark will submit the Precinct 4 budget with at least a 5 percent reduction during the 2017-2018 budget hearings.

β€œWhile I understand the need for increased law enforcement (boots on the ground), road construction, repair and drainage, now is the time to buckle down and make some tough decisions sorely needed to begin the cuts somewhere in order to obtain the money necessary needed for public safety and infrastructure.”

"The time has come to make some changes in our way of doing business. Our method of budgeting is out of control. This year I am looking for department heads to come and tell the court what they have done to cut their budget for the coming year. I will lead by example by cutting my precinct 4 budget by a minimum of 5 percent. Commissioner Noack has committed to do this as well.”
