Lake Houston Levels Lowered 1 Foot Ahead Of Storms

Rain from Pacific Coast Hurricane Willa is expected to move through the Houston area late Wednesday, and that has Public Works taking action

HOUSTON, TX — Officials with the Houston Public Works Department announced Wednesday that Lake Houston levels would be lowered 12 inches as the threat of heavy rain looms Wednesday evening. Houston City Council Member Dave Martin, who represents Kingwood and Lake Houston on the Houston City Council, said the lake levels would be lowered from 42.5 feet to 41.5 feet as storms that are predicted to drop 1 to 2 inches of rain move in late Wednesday evening.

The expected moisture is a result of Hurricane Willa which made landfall in western Mexico, and is may drop several inches of rain in the Houston area.

Officials began lowering Lake Houston Wednesday morning. Property owners along Lake Houston were advised to make arrangements for boats and other items along the shoreline as the lake levels were lowered.

"Please keep in mind that the Lake will only be lowered to 41.5 feet until the threat of today's severe weather passes," Martin said in a statement. "Once the threat of severe weather leaves our area the lake will be allowed to fill back up to the normal pool level of 42.5 feet."

Levels for Lake Houston can be monitored by visiting the Coastal Water Authority website.
