Looking eastward at 9 p.m. in December you will see the Winter Hexagon. It is a huge asterism, the brightest stars from six constellations. Orion’s Belt’s three bright stars are vertical in the southeast. Follow the belt towards the horizon to Sirius, the brightest star in the nighttime sky, and Canis Major, the big dog.
