
Humble, TX -- Congressman Ted Poe, R-TX, was diagnosed with leukemia recently. Poe announced the news on his website and explained that, during Congress' August recess, he will be receiving treatment at the MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Prior to his election to Congress in 2004, Poe was a Harris County criminal judge known for imposing creative and often humiliating punishments. He routinely made convicted criminals walk around holding signs explaining what they had done to break the law.

Since being elected to represent Texas' 2nd Congressional District, Poe has been a somewhat polarizing figure in Houston politics. He is beloved by many rural, suburban and conservative voters who support his uncompromising approach to prohibiting abortion, lowering taxes and fighting terrorism.
Poe is disliked by many urban and liberal voters for his uncompromising prohibition to abortion, opposition to same sex marriage, marijuana legalization and immigration.

Despite Poe's disagreement with many of his voters' beliefs, after the 2010 census, Poe's district was gerrymandered to include Houston's historic gay community.
