Ted Poe Honors Fallen Officers During National Police Week

HUMBLE, TX — Outgoing U.S. Rep. Ted Poe honored the lives of 17 Texas Peace Officers lost in the line of duty in 2017 during a special ceremony at the Humble Civic Center on Monday.

Three of those peace officers were from Harris County, including Deputy Clint Greenwood, who was gunned down outside a Baytown courthouse in April 2017, HPD Officer Steve Perez who lost his life in flood waters during Hurricane Harvey, and Officer Elias Martinez who was killed in a motorcycle crash in September.

“Every day, these brave men and women put on their uniform, pin on their badge and put themselves in harm's way. We are grateful year-round for their service, and we take one week each year to thank them for all that they do to keep our communities, families and property safe,” Poe said in a prepared statement.

The ceremony was held in observance of National Police Week, which began in 1962 when President John F. Kennedy first proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day.

Other communities in the Houston area are expected to hold similar ceremonies this week to honor their local law enforcement communities.

National Police Week ends Sunday.
