Houston ISD Students Plan Walkouts Friday

The National Student Walkout on the anniversary of Columbine includes Bellaire, Lamar, Northside, Strake Jesuit and others listed.

HOUSTON, TX — Students from at least 12 schools have signed up to participate in a national walkout protest on Friday on the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre. In other words, it's hardly any students were even born when the Columbine massacre occurred.

However, in light of other recent school shootings, most recently the one in Parkland, Florida, students across the nation have come together in protests to their local and national lawmakers. Schools listed in the Houston area for tomorrow's walkout (all at 10 a.m.) include:

Bellaire High School
Lamar High School
Meyerland Middle School
Westbury Christian High School
Lanier Middle School
The Kinkaid School
Strake Jesuit Prep
Young Women's College Preparatory Academy
East Early College High School
Northside High School
Eastwood Academy High School
Garden Oaks Middle School

The website for the national school walkout states the following:

"The National Student Walkout is a nationwide protest of our leaders’ failure to pass laws that protect us from gun violence. Mass shootings happen far too frequently in America, and we as a nation have become numb to seeing the news. After each one, the same cycle takes place: the media spend less than a week on the story, politicians offer their “thoughts and prayers,” and nothing ever changes. But after the horrific massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, young Americans are taking matters into their own hands."
